Housing counselors: Get certified

Housing counselors who assist consumers with pre-purchase, foreclosure prevention and rental counseling must be certified by August 1, 2020.

For those intending to become a HUD-certified housing counselor, they must pass an exam and work for a HUD-approved housing counseling agency. Certification is intended to improve and standardize counseling services and help prevent scams and discrimination.

The Housing Counseling certification requirement is mandated by the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010.
