Protect Your Identity Week starts October 20!

Wednesday, October 17, 2012

National Protect Your Identity Week (PYIW) is October 20-27. This year’s theme, “ID Theft Protection on the Go,” draws special attention to the increased risks posed by smartphones and mobile technology.

Identity theft has been the top consumer complaint to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for the past twelve years in a row—proof that it’s just as important as ever for consumers to be aware of the risks and understand how to protect themselves. As a member of the PYIW Coalition, Consumer Action wants you to know about the many resources available to help inform your clients.

Visit the PYIW website—ProtectYourIDNow.org—to find tips and resources, take a quiz that helps identify any gaps in your knowledge of mobile phone ID theft protection, view more than a dozen videos and locate events in your area. During PYIW, hundreds of identity theft protection events, including educational workshops, credit report reviews and free document shredding, will be held in communities around the country.

While you’re online, visit Consumer-Action.org or our privacy project website, Privacy-Information.org, to read, download or order some of our multilingual consumer education materials and training tools related to identity theft, credit reports and secure mobile banking and transactions. Non-profit community-based organizations can order available printed materials in bulk at no charge.

If you have any questions or would like to order Consumer Action materials by phone, please call 415-777-9648. Or you can send an email to [email protected].
