Did you know that popular tax filing software like TaxSlayer will let you file your federal taxes for free through the IRS Free File program? If your adjusted gross income is under $62,000 a year, you have several industry-leading tax software options to choose from to avoid what usually averages out to a $30 filing fee.

According to the IRS, more than 100 million people are eligible to use these innovative and secure products to get their tax returns completed fast. “You don’t have to be an expert on taxes,” said IRS commissioner John A. Koskinen. “Free File software can help walk you through the steps and help you get it right.”

The IRS is rolling out several new Free File perks for 2016, such as more software providers offering both free federal and state tax returns, easy importation of form W-2 information, and step-by-step help navigating the new health care coverage requirements. Free File can also help interested users invest in the U.S. Treasury’s new, free retirement savings account called myRA.

Consumer Action empowers low- and moderate-income and limited-English-speaking consumers nationwide to financially prosper through education and advocacy.
