Insurance
How can I make sure an insurance agent or company is legitimate?
Call your state insurance department or other licensing agency and ask if the company or individual is licensed to do business.
To find your state insurance department online, visit the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) and use the Map of Insurance Web Sites to find your department.
If you don't have internet access, look in the state government section in the front of your white pages phone directory to find a contact number.
NAIC also offers the Consumer Information Source (CIS) that you can use to check insurance companies before you purchase insurance.
