This interactive tool, designed by the New York Times, can help you determine whether to buy or to rent is a better financial decision. More sophisticated than the "rent ratio," which simply takes annual rent compared with purchase price (and suggests renting whenever this ratio is greater than 20), this tool includes variables like interest rates, property taxes, and anticipated rent increases.
