Consumer Action recognized by Congresswoman Solis

The hypnotic sounds of reggaeton and Latin hip-hop music subsided as Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis took the stage to welcome exhibitors and attendees of the Community Resource Fair. Solis was the host for the Aug. 16 event held in East Los Angeles and attended by more than 100 community, advocacy, housing, employment, and health services agencies.
Consumer Action's Nelson Santiago staffed an exhibit table, where he distributed free consumer literature and answered questions about consumer scams, foreclosure, credit card companies, and Internet commerce safety.
Santiago spoke with seniors from nearby as well as families who traveled miles to hear Congresswoman Solis.
Ms. Solis was very much available to her constituents. One father who attended the event with his family explained that his young son hopes to join the Air Force and that his son wanted to meet the Congresswoman to tell her about his dream. Before leaving Consumer Action's exhibit table, the youth's father picked up a copy of Talking to Teens About Money, saying "My son's going to need this."
The Congresswoman thanked Santiago for his participation in the Community Resource Fair. Consumer Action also received a Certificate of Congressional Recognition from the Congresswoman.
First elected in 2000, Ms. Solis is serving her fourth term in the U.S. House of Representatives. She represents California's 32nd Congressional District, which includes portions of East Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley. Prior to her election to Congress, Solis served eight years in the California state legislature. In August 2000, Solis became the first woman to receive the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for her pioneering work on environmental justice issues in California.
