Do homework when picking tax preparer

A federal judge dealt consumers a blow Jan. 18 when he ruled that the Internal Revenue Service has no authority to regulate hundreds of thousands of previously unregulated tax preparers and ordered the tax agency to immediately halt its efforts to impose minimal requirements on them.
The IRS filed a motion last week asking the judge to lift his injunction pending an appeal, which it says it has a "reasonable likelihood" of winning.
The surprise court ruling highlights how little oversight the federal government has over tax preparers and how important it is for consumers to do their homework. Here are some tips.
