Housing, credit cards on Congress’ plate

Although lawmakers have a lot to do, including passing 13 appropriations bills, congressional leaders are knocking down expectations of accomplishing much beyond a simple continuing resolution that would keep the government in operation until January.
Democratic leaders will try to push through another economic stimulus program over passive opposition by the Republicans. Details about what might be included in the stimulus plan remain vague. The lawmakers are also expected to vote on several versions of an energy bill that could open up more federal waters to development.
The seizure of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will be discussed in hearing rooms and cloak rooms, and there may be an attempt to legally block top executives of the two firms from collecting on their severance pay.
Finally, the House may vote on a bill that would give credit-card holders more rights, but action by the Senate this year is unlikely, leaders say.
