AAA forecasts that a remarkable 91.9 million Americans will take passenger-vehicle trips 50 miles or more from home this holiday season—Dec. 23 through Jan. 2—and that’s up 1.4% from last year, as settling fuel prices spur more driving. Sadly, more driving usually means more people running into each other.
What you don’t want is a flurry of insurance decisions that have to be made while you’re still half-nuts from the effects of the crash—and that can be weeks later, not just a few minutes afterward on the side of the road. The Consumer Federation of America says it has a guide that can help prevent you from making the worst errors.
A couple of examples: You, not the insurance company, have the right to decide where the damaged car goes for repairs.
