You’re cruising along in the car and you need a phone number. Or you’re at home and you can’t find the phonebook. So you dial 411 for the number — and get billed $1.25 or more by AT&T, Cingular, Sprint Nextel, Verizon Wireless or one of the other phone companies.
Now, a Boston advertising company is trying to make it big by giving away a service that the phone companies make a fortune providing. 1-800-FREE411 offers free directory assistance, paying for the service by running a 10-second advertisement before giving the phone number the caller requested.
The service is a product of Jingle Networks, a startup formed by a group of advertising industry veterans.
