Predicting the future of the Internet is a high-risk undertaking. But there are trends afoot, which, if unchecked, may threaten our basic values or put excess power or control in the hands of particular interests. Privacy threats are everywhere this summer: We have heard about geo-tags, reconstituted cookies as spyware, surveillance cameras, RFIDs at Wal-Mart, privacy issues on LinkedIn, the US Senate investigating privacy issues, and a Web “Do Not Track” list.
