E-Verify to cause complications and challenges

With immigration reform once again on Congress’ agenda, many proposals include “internal enforcement” of immigration law through federal background checks on all workers. Consumer Action believes the E-Verify system, and proposals for a national E-Verify mandate, will cause complications and challenges.

Consumer Action joins the ACLU and other coalition members in denouncing a mandatory national “E-Verify” electronic employment verification system established by S. 202 or in subsequent comprehensive immigration reform bills. Costs to businesses and workers will mount. Citizens, both natural-born and naturalized, will have to appeal to the federal government for the right to work. And identity fraud will drive E-Verify to become a biometric national identification system capable of use well beyond immigration control.
