世界地球日訂於4月22日，州長柯謨趁此時機簽署了之前通過的紐約州全州購物塑料袋禁令，加之市議會剛剛通過的紙袋收費法，意味著從明年3月1日起消費者在購物時將不能再得到商家提供的塑料袋，而如果要求商家提供紙袋必須加5分錢的費用。不過這並不是說塑料袋將就此絕跡，一些特定的塑料購物袋未被列入禁令之內。
