Consumer Action team members Jamie Woo and Kinny Li attended the Chinatown Families Economic Resource Fair on May 9 at the Donaldina Cameron House in San Francisco. The event brought together financial, employment, utility, educational and social services together to help Chinatown residents, especially new immigrants to access vital resources within the community to improve their overall well being and financial health.

More than 400 enthusiastic people attended the Chinatown Families Economic Resource Fair. Consumer Action provided information on Identity Theft, Building and Keeping Good Credit, Talking to Teens about Money and Saving Your Home From Foreclosure. Consumer Action offered its free multilingual publications to attendees in English and Chinese. Materials are also available in Spanish, Vietnamese and Korean.

There were three workshops during the fair: “How to Set Job Search Goals,” “How to Save for the Future,” and “How to Build Your Financial Credit.” Outreach team member Jamie Woo presented the MoneyWi$e Building and Keeping Good Credit module. Many Chinese immigrants transact business using only cash. Woo facilitated a breakdown cultural barriers and explain the importance of building and keeping good credit.

Woo and Li answered many questions from workshop participants and fair spectators on credit card use, bank account safety tips, and other financial literacy topics.
