If you miss the Oct. 15 tax extension deadline, it won't be the end of the world, but your bank account will not thank you.

The penalty for not filing your taxes is usually 5% of the tax you owe for each month or a portion of the month that your return was late. There is a penalty for not filing your taxes and a penalty for not paying your taxes.
