New report: U.S. Education Secretary has failed American students

Friday, March 02, 2018

U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos's policy decisions have been a boon for for-profit colleges, student loan companies, and school privatization advocates during her first year as head of the U.S. Department of Education. These actions have come at the expense of America's kindergarten through 12th grade students and college students, according to a new report compiled by the offices of Senator Warren and Congresswoman Katherine Clark (D-Mass.)

The DeVos Watch Annual Report argues that Secretary DeVos's actions have raised serious ethical questions, prioritized unscrupulous for-profit colleges over student borrowers, weakened traditional public education in favor of charter and private schools, and reversed civil rights protections for students.

Among the report’s findings, a serious rollback of Obama-era regulations, including those that provide relief for students who were defrauded by shady for-profit colleges and expose student loan borrowers to high collection fees.
