Preview National Consumer Protection Week

Thursday, January 13, 2011

Federal, state, and local government agencies and national organizations such as Consumer Action look forward to National Consumer Protection Week as an opportunity to highlight how important it is for consumers to be well-informed about a myriad of issues, from credit to money management to avoiding scams and fraud. In its 13th year, National Consumer Protection Week will be celebrated on March 6-12, 2011.

"While Consumer Action is focused on consumer protection 24/7, all year long, we welcome the opportunity offered by National Consumer Protection Week to spotlight financial empowerment tools and resources," said Linda Sherry of Consumer Action. "Our lives are so busy that we need a reminder of places we can go to educate ourselves and submit complaints to the authorities when things go wrong."

Sherry pointed to a website and toolkit developed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the "nation's consumer advocate," to mark National Consumer Protection Week (www.ncpw.gov). At the free site, which offers a section in Spanish, you can read, download and order copies of educational materials provided by more than two dozen organizations, read and comment on a new blog, and view a calendar of National Consumer Protection Week events nationwide.
