The U.S. Justice Department has secured nearly $4 million in refunds for consumers who were persuaded by scammers to purchase—and provide the scammers with access to—Walmart gift cards between April 1, 2016, and July 31, 2017, that were then frozen by Walmart in an effort to thwart the scam. The perpetrators posed as a loved one in trouble or impersonated a legitimate business or government agency, directing the targets to purchase gift cards to help their loved one or satisfy a non-existent business or government debt. Impacted consumers can receive a refund of the amount loaded onto the Walmart gift cards they purchased, and subsequently frozen, by filing a remission form by the deadline.
Claim deadline is Friday, 14 July 2023.
