Having trouble with your federal student loans?

Friday, July 01, 2016

Got a federal student loan complaint? The U.S. Department of Education has launched a new complaint site to help solve problems borrowers are having with federal student loan balances, loan servicers, debt collectors, and schools’ financial aid offices.

The Department of Education says its goal is to find meaningful resolutions for consumers. Student loan holders can file a complaint using their Federal Student Aid identification number (FSA ID) or they can submit complaints anonymously. (However to receive a response consumers must use their FSA ID).

Click here to access the complaint system.

The new system is a directive of the President, as outlined in the Student Aid Bill of Rights and officially launched July 1st.

Borrowers with private student loans (loans backed by a bank or financial institution) should submit complaints to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Consumer Action would like to hear how well your student loan complaint was handled. Please send feedback here.
