Consumer discounts on prescription drugs

Consumer Action strives to provide you with the latest resources and information to better serve your clients. Today, we want to share with you the details on a new effort to help consumers without prescription drug coverage save money.

The goal of the Prescription Drug Savings Program, launched by the partnership FamilyWize, is to reduce the cost of medicine for children, families and individuals by $100 million in five years. To accomplish this goal FamilyWize is distributing prescription drug discount cards that report to save consumers up to 20% on 8 out of 10 typical prescriptions.

How it works? Consumers simply present the card and prescription to a participating pharmacy to obtain the discounted price. There is no income limit, age requirement, eligibility or registration required. The card can also be used as often as needed, for any prescription and for everyone in the family.

FamilyWize is a partnership of more than ten thousand community and faith-based organizations, county agencies, doctors, pharmacies, companies, and individuals joined together to distribute free FamilyWize prescription drug discount cards in their communities. The cost savings on the medicine is provided by more than 53,000 participating local pharmacies that have agreed voluntarily to accept prices for medications that are close to the prices they make available to large insurance companies and employers.

Note: this is not health insurance. Discounts are available only at participating pharmacies.
